I wish I didn’t exist

I. Yearning for Nothingness

The human experience is a tapestry woven from a multitude of emotions and thoughts, many of which are at times difficult to articulate. Amongst these, there lies a sentiment that is often hushed but equally prevalent, the yearning for nothingness. This yearning is a peculiar feeling that beckons one to escape the present moment and plunge into oblivion, a state where all consciousness and sensation are lost.

The longing for nothingness is not to be mistaken with a desire for death, as it is rooted in a far more ambiguous yearning to simply cease to be. It can stem from a host of negative emotions such as embarrassment, shame, rejection, isolation, and the constant questioning of one’s worth and significance. At times, it may even be prompted by the contemplation of living on a dying earth and the fear of being a burden to others.

In these moments, the hypothetical comfort of losing all awareness and sensation can be all too tempting. It is strange, in a way, that in the face of immense suffering and discomfort, we possess the capacity to fetishize oblivion. The word “fetish” is indeed appropriate here, as it implies the obsessive and frenzied pursuit of a fantasy that is unlikely to live up to its hype.

II. Struggle under Nothingness

Despite this promise of dissatisfaction, the pursuit is so all-consuming that it is soon forgotten. The struggle for non-existence continues, fueled by the radical attempt at this fantasy of non-being. If we were to succeed, we would never experience it fully, for that is the point. We would no longer be satisfied, for we would simply cease to be. Yet, the escape hatch is always present, waiting for us to make a few carefully crafted plans and often aided by a pacifying substance.

The idea that one has the power to step out of the fetishized alternative, to finally exit the cycle of self-hatred, boredom, despair, and fatigue, lingers in every corner of the mind. This sense of autonomy, despite it all, gives us a say in the matter. The longing for nothingness is a feeling that we should not ignore, but rather confront and understand. It is a reminder of the depth of our capacity for pain and suffering, but also of our ability to imagine and strive for something better.

III. Escape from Nothingness

Fortunately, there are also moments in our lives that offer a glimpse of the beauty of being. Moments of the sublime, where we are in awe of something larger than ourselves, of shared connection with friends and loved ones, of creating something that others enjoy, and moments that force us to confront the fragility of life. We are barely anything to begin with and that is perfectly fine, as every moment holds potentialities that we are yet to experience. We know this only because we have experienced it before, and to give up now would mean missing out on all that life has to offer. Non-existence will come to us soon enough, so why not hold on to being just a little bit longer?

The desire for non-existence is a complex and multifaceted aspect of the human condition. While it may seem alluring in moments of suffering and discomfort, it is in the face of beauty and awe that we are reminded of the power of being. Our existence may be brief, but it is a chance for us to experience all that life has to offer. So, let us embrace the present moment and all its potentialities, for if we give up now, there will be no going back.
